Wycombe Wanderers Left Reeling as Reading’s Late Penalty

A late penalty from Harvey Knibbs saw Wycombe Wanderers fall to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Reading, seriously denting their League One promotion ambitions in a dramatic cross-county clash.

As Wrexham’s earlier victory over Burton Albion played out, Wycombe entered the match knowing the stakes were high. A win would have kept the pressure on their Welsh rivals, but the result instead leaves them six points off the automatic places, albeit with one game still in hand.

The Chairboys began brightly, forcing Reading to defend deep from the outset. Adam Reach tested Joel Pereira early with a high lobbed effort that the goalkeeper had to tip over. Soon after, Sonny Bradley met Luke Leahy’s cross with a strong header that just cleared the bar, as the visitors continued to threaten.

Reading struggled to establish a rhythm in the opening 45 minutes, and the game’s tone shifted as fouls and tempers began to disrupt play. The local rivalry was on full display, with tensions bubbling just beneath the surface in a fragmented first half.

Turning point in the second half

Following the break, the home side slowly began to edge back into contention. Mamadi Camara forced Will Norris into action with a close-range header, but the real danger came at the other end. McCleary, facing his former club, connected with a powerful header that looked destined for the top corner, only to see Pereira produce a stunning save to keep the scores level.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 77th minute under controversial circumstances. Cameron Humphreys brought down Chem Campbell inside the area, and Knibbs stepped up to convert the resulting penalty with confidence. The goal—his 16th of the campaign—proved decisive.

Reading’s defence held firm in the closing stages, denying Wycombe any clear opportunities to draw level. The victory means the Royals have now gone nine matches unbeaten at home, while Wanderers must regroup quickly ahead of a critical stretch of fixtures.

Despite having more shots and greater possession, Wycombe lacked the clinical edge to make it count. Pereira’s commanding display in goal ensured the hosts walked away with all three points in a fiercely contested affair.

Site opinion

This was a gut punch for Wycombe. With the pressure on, they created enough chances to win the match but lacked the composure in front of goal—and paid the price. Reading’s unbeaten home run is no fluke, and their ability to weather sustained pressure and strike when the opportunity arose shows a growing maturity under their current setup. For Wycombe, it’s not quite panic time, but the margin for error has significantly narrowed. That game in hand must now deliver, or their automatic hopes could evaporate quickly.
