Tom Wagner Hints At Another Big Birmingham City Transfer

Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner has opened the door to another record-breaking summer in the transfer market – but says the club’s ability to invest will depend on what financial ‘headroom’ they can create under EFL rules.

Speaking in the wake of the club’s Vertu Trophy final disappointment at Wembley, Wagner insisted Blues are still in growth mode following their League One title win and return to the Championship. He said the club remains committed to building a strong squad under new manager Chris Davies, but within the framework of the EFL’s Profitability & Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Blues Ready For More “Smart Spending”

Blues smashed their transfer record last summer with the signing of Jay Stansfield from Fulham – a deal initially rumoured at £20 million, though sources suggest the final figure including add-ons is closer to £12-14 million. Wagner didn’t deny the possibility of making an even bigger splash.

“If we have the headroom, we’ll do it… A lot of it is thinking about what do we spend this year versus what we spend in future years? Where’s the talent? What’s the price? What’s the value?”

Stansfield’s arrival proved a masterstroke. The forward scored 23 times in all competitions, including 18 in the league, helping Blues secure promotion with six games to spare. His signing also showed Birmingham’s willingness to be bold – and Wagner believes that smart approach can continue.

However, the shift to the Championship brings new financial pressures. Under the EFL’s PSR rules, Birmingham will need to limit losses and spend within tightly controlled parameters. That’s where Wagner’s focus on revenue becomes crucial.

“We are focused on making this a commercially viable club. I will not rest until we are the most powerful revenue-generating club in the Championship by a wide margin, including those who get parachute payments.”

He believes off-field developments – including the upcoming Amazon Prime documentary covering the club’s journey – will play a vital role in boosting income. Wagner revealed the series will be shown in over 200 countries and, along with major sponsorships, could generate revenue levels similar to clubs receiving Premier League parachute payments.

Wagner was clear: more money in means more flexibility to spend. He said the club’s financial planning will weigh up short-term opportunity with long-term growth, aiming to repeat last summer’s “exceptional” business while keeping Birmingham on a sustainable trajectory.

Wagner’s remarks reinforce Birmingham City’s ambition to evolve from a promotion-winning side to a Championship force. While financial headroom is the buzzword, the signs are that Knighthead will back the manager again – provided the numbers make sense. With a sharper revenue focus than ever and a recruitment strategy already proven, this summer could be another major step forward for the Blues.
