Since joining Lincoln City in January, Sam Clucas has found regular opportunities on the pitch limited, leading to growing speculation among supporters and widespread debate across social media.
A player with Premier League pedigree and local roots, Clucas’s signing was met with optimism. However, his absence from recent matchday squads has prompted many to question the rationale behind it.
Competition and Tactical Choices
While Clucas has offered encouraging performances in short bursts—most notably scoring directly from a corner against Mansfield—he has neither decisively outshone nor fallen below the standards of his midfield peers. However, Lincoln’s central midfield is a competitive area. The likes of Ethan Hamilton, Conor McGrandles, Tom Bayliss, and Ethan Erhahon are younger, under contract, and likely to form part of the club’s future plans.
Clucas, in contrast, is on a short-term deal and may not remain at the club beyond the current campaign. From a strategic standpoint, it is understandable that the coaching staff would prioritise minutes for players they intend to build around. While supporters are justified in questioning why Clucas is not being utilised—particularly during lacklustre performances such as the recent 1–1 draw with Shrewsbury—it does not automatically imply neglect or mismanagement.
Debunking the Conspiracies
As is often the case in football, speculation has given way to conspiracy theories. Some claim Clucas was not wanted by head coach Michael Skubala or that his contract includes a performance-related extension clause that the club is avoiding. However, these suggestions are unfounded. Contract clauses typically activate at standardised appearance milestones—ten, fifteen, or twenty games—not eight or nine.
There is also no indication that Clucas is being treated unfairly behind the scenes. No reports suggest he is training separately or has been isolated from the group, as occurred with certain players under previous regimes. By all accounts, Clucas remains a professional presence within the squad.
Narrative Over Performance
Much of the discourse appears to stem from the appealing narrative surrounding Clucas: a local player returning home to make an impact. However, this romanticism risks clouding judgement. Had the club signed a similarly experienced player from a National League background without local ties, it is unlikely there would be such fervent calls for his inclusion.
The club’s broader context must also be acknowledged. Lincoln have been among League One’s top scorers since Christmas and are currently outperforming their financial standing in the table. While not all performances have been convincing, the notion of systemic failure, based solely on Clucas’s lack of minutes, seems disproportionate.
A Balanced Perspective
Would it be beneficial to see more of Clucas before the season concludes? Certainly. His experience could still offer value in the final fixtures. However, his limited involvement should not be interpreted as evidence of internal discord or managerial oversight. Sometimes, players simply do not fit a manager’s system or long-term plan.
In summary, while frustration is understandable, the situation calls for perspective. Clucas’s story at Lincoln may not be the fairytale fans hoped for—but nor is it the crisis some suggest.
