Salford City are aiming to bring Matty Young back to the Peninsula Stadium for another season, following the teenager’s standout performances during his loan spell from Sunderland.
Alan Nixon reports that the League Two side, co-owned by former Manchester United stars including Gary Neville, are eager to secure a second loan agreement for the promising 18-year-old goalkeeper ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
Young’s Impressive Rise At Salford
Young joined Salford last summer after a superb stint at Darlington, where he was crowned Young Player of the Season in the National League North. He arrived with a burgeoning reputation and quickly made his mark despite competing with experienced stopper Jamie Jones.
Breaking into the first team in November, Young went on to make 17 league appearances, demonstrating maturity, shot-stopping ability, and composure beyond his years.
Alan Nixon states: “Salford City are hoping to strike a second loan agreement with Sunderland for Matty Young, who has impressed during his time in Greater Manchester.”
His time at Salford has coincided with international recognition, with Young earning caps at England Under-18, Under-19, and Under-20 levels. His continued development is seen as crucial by Sunderland, who rewarded him with a new long-term contract until 2028 last year.
Young’s Career Path
Born in November 2006, Young signed his first professional deal with Sunderland in 2023. A loan to Darlington provided his first taste of senior football, and his successful transition into the EFL with Salford has further cemented his reputation as one of Sunderland’s brightest prospects.
Speaking earlier this year, Young said: “I want to play for this club in the future. That is the goal for me. I am working my way up to hopefully get my opportunity. I am really pleased with the progress I am making so far.”
Salford view Young as an ideal candidate to continue anchoring their defence as they aim for a strong push next season. With Sunderland keen for him to gain more experience before stepping up to their first team, another loan move appears to suit all parties perfectly.
Site Opinion
Bringing Matty Young back for another season would be a huge boost for Salford City. The 18-year-old has proven he can handle the pressures of senior football and would be an ideal foundation piece for a promotion-challenging side. Salford have offered him the perfect environment to grow — and retaining him for 2025-26 could be one of their smartest summer moves.
