Rotherham United Make Managerial Decision

Matt Hamshaw has been named the permanent manager of Rotherham United, committing to a three-year deal after a promising interim spell that breathed new life into the team’s League One campaign.

After taking the reins following Steve Evans’ dismissal, the 43-year-old oversaw a notable turnaround. The Millers posted three wins from four matches under Hamshaw’s guidance, earning vital victories away at Northampton and Bolton, as well as a home success over Blackpool.

While the recent defeat to Stockport halted that momentum, the club’s leadership had seen enough to make the appointment official. The Millers have moved up to 13th in the table and now stand on the brink of mathematical safety with just one more point needed to secure their status in League One.

Rejecting top-flight temptation

The club also revealed that Hamshaw had been targeted for a coaching role in the Premier League. Despite the lure of the top tier, he has chosen to commit to Rotherham, where he has long-standing ties and deep familiarity with the setup, having previously worked under Paul Warne.

The decision echoes a previous managerial path taken by the club, when Warne himself stepped up from within the coaching staff to great effect. Chairman Tony Stewart praised the appointment and the character of the new boss.

“It was clear to us from a very early stage in his tenure that Matt was the individual that we wanted to take us forward.

“Not only is Matt an incredibly talented coach, he is also an individual who we feel embodies what the club stands for both on and off the pitch.

“He is the kind of hard-working and heart-on-his-sleeve character that has historically enjoyed great success here and – as we did with Paul Warne when he made the step up from the coaching ranks – we see great potential within him as a leader.”

Hamshaw’s internal promotion is seen as a continuation of the club’s philosophy of investing in familiar faces who understand the ethos of Rotherham United. His decision to turn down a Premier League opportunity could resonate strongly with fans eager for long-term loyalty and stability.

With safety in sight and momentum on their side, attention now turns to whether Hamshaw can build on this solid foundation in the months to come.

Site opinion

Hamshaw’s appointment is a blend of sentiment and strategy. Rotherham have a habit of identifying leadership from within, and the early signs suggest the gamble could pay off once again. His decision to stay, despite top-flight interest, hints at a manager who values vision over prestige. That commitment might just set the tone for a new chapter at the club — one built on identity, graft, and internal trust.
