Ruben Selles expects a tough test as Reading face Rotherham United in their next League One match, with the Royals looking to secure their first away win of the season.
Reading Seek Momentum Against Struggling Rotherham United
Reading have found themselves in a strong run of form, bouncing back from a heavy 5-2 defeat to Bolton Wanderers by securing two impressive victories. First, they overcame Huddersfield Town, followed by a dominant 3-1 win over Burton Albion. As they prepare for their next challenge, Ruben Selles’ side will be hoping to continue this momentum against a struggling Rotherham United team, who have yet to adapt fully to life in League One following their relegation last season.
Currently sitting in 17th place with 10 points, Rotherham are desperate to string together a series of good results. However, they managed to lift some of the pressure by breaking a long-standing away win drought, defeating Cambridge United in their most recent outing. This victory could provide them with much-needed confidence as they return to the New York Stadium to face Reading.
Previewing the clash, Selles acknowledged the challenge ahead, telling the Reading Chronicle, “We need to be fresh for Saturday after two games in three days—it’s always difficult. We know it is going to be a completely different game. Whenever we play against Steve [Evans], it has been a really difficult game with lots of duels and second actions. They are a very aggressive team against the ball and want to play territory against us. I expect a different game on the weekend, but we will be ready for the challenge.”
Ruben Selles Confident Despite Tough Opposition
Steve Evans’ Rotherham side has struggled to find consistency this season, winning only once at home so far. Despite that, they are beginning to find their footing, having lost only once in their last five matches, that loss coming to table-topping Birmingham City. Evans, who was in charge of Stevenage last season, has a history with Selles and Reading, having been beaten by the Royals both home and away last season.
Although Rotherham’s home record has been far from impressive, Evans’ squad will be riding high after finally ending their nearly two-year streak without an away win, a psychological barrier that had been holding them back. However, the Millers have proven difficult to beat at home in recent encounters with Reading, notably securing a 4-0 victory in their last meeting at the New York Stadium. This weekend’s contest is expected to be one of the more fiercely contested matches in League One, with both teams having plenty to fight for.
Our View
Ruben Selles and his Reading side are building momentum, and while a clash against Steve Evans’ Rotherham will be no easy task, they have every reason to feel confident. Selles has already proven he can get the better of an Evans-coached side from their encounters last season, and with Reading finding form, this weekend presents a strong opportunity to claim a much-needed away win.
For Rotherham, their recent win over Cambridge United will boost morale, but they remain vulnerable at home. Reading’s attack, bolstered by the likes of Andy Carroll, will be looking to exploit any defensive weaknesses. A victory for Reading would strengthen their push up the League One table and help erase the disappointment of their recent struggles on the road.
