Queens Park Rangers Eyeing Ex-Birmingham City and Liverpool Man

Reports suggest that Queens Park Rangers are considering former Birmingham City defender Gregory Vignal as a potential replacement for current manager Marti Cifuentes.

French newspaper L’Equipe claims that QPR’s management is closely monitoring Vignal as a candidate, with the former Liverpool player spotted attending the Hoops recent match against Sunderland.

Cifuentes’ Position Under Review Amid Challenging Start

Marti Cifuentes, who joined QPR last season with high hopes of guiding the team towards a stronger position in the Championship, has found his debut season increasingly difficult. The club has slipped to the bottom of the league table after QPR’s recent 2-0 loss to Leeds United. While no official statement indicates Cifuentes is on the brink, the mounting pressure and disappointing results have raised questions over his future at Loftus Road.

Despite the club’s precarious situation, Cifuentes remains confident in his position and continues to emphasise his commitment to the job. He recently shared his thoughts on the challenges his team has faced due to numerous injuries, as well as his ongoing relationship with QPR’s board.

“I receive a lot of confidence from the club, and I work as always. I’ve not been saying much about it (the injury problems), but we are approaching the international break, and the main priority now is to recover players. We’ve got nine players out. Nine. With a squad like ours, it’s very difficult, especially when many of those players are very important.”

Vignal Observed at Loftus Road Amid Rumours

Gregory Vignal, who had previously been linked with a coaching role at Sunderland, reportedly attended QPR’s goalless draw with Sunderland earlier this month. While his presence could be purely coincidental, it has led to speculation that QPR may be evaluating the Frenchman as a possible replacement. Vignal’s experience includes stints with Birmingham City, Liverpool, and Dundee United, and he has reportedly been looking to establish himself in the English football managerial scene.

Though L’Equipe reports QPR’s interest in Vignal, there is no official confirmation from the club about any potential changes. However, Vignal’s name being floated as a possible candidate indicates that QPR may be exploring backup options as they navigate a challenging season.

Site Opinion

Vignal’s potential appointment could signal a fresh approach for QPR, but bringing in a manager with limited experience at this level could also pose risks. Cifuentes’ tenure has seen unexpected challenges, primarily due to injuries, and the current squad still supports his vision. However, with QPR’s low position in the Championship, the club may feel compelled to act if results don’t improve soon.
