Portsmouth Make Fan’s Plea Ahead of Watford Clash

Portsmouth have called on supporters to help protect the club from further sanctions by behaving responsibly during today’s critical Championship match against Watford at Fratton Park.

John Mousinho’s men sit six points clear of the drop zone after a sensational 5-3 triumph over Norwich City at Carrow Road. Victory against Watford would confirm Pompey’s place in the Championship for the 2025-26 season with two games to spare.

Pompey’s Rallying Cry To Fans

As part of a wider campaign to improve matchday safety, the club reiterated its support for the ‘Love Football, Protect the Game’ initiative. Originally launched in 2022, the campaign targets unacceptable behaviour such as pyrotechnic usage, pitch incursions, and discriminatory abuse.

Pompey’s warning comes after a series of incidents this season, most notably a bottle thrown towards a match official during their draw with Derby County, which is still under investigation. In January, Portsmouth were fined £50,000 following crowd trouble during their League One title-clincher at Barnsley, leading to a stark reminder from the FA regarding future conduct.

Portsmouth’s statement read: “We want all of you to be able to enjoy the season’s finale and show their appreciation to the Pompey players and staff, but to do that, we are asking fans to play their part in ensuring that the actions of the minority do not spoil the game for all.”

The club emphasised that sanctions could range from further financial penalties to potential sporting punishments. Supporters found guilty of misconduct could also face lengthy stadium bans, criminal records, or restrictions affecting education and employment opportunities.

Examples cited from across the country include a five-year ban for lighting a pyro, three-year bans for discriminatory posts and pitch invasions, and significant fines. Pompey have urged fans to report any concerning behaviour immediately using their designated matchday text line or by alerting stewards in the ground.

Following today’s fixture, Portsmouth face tough matches against Sheffield Wednesday away and Hull City at Fratton Park. Securing survival today would allow them to approach the run-in with confidence and pride rather than tension and fear.

Ensuring supporters maintain discipline could be just as important as the players doing their jobs on the pitch in these final crucial games.

Site Opinion

Portsmouth are absolutely right to highlight the importance of fan behaviour at such a pivotal moment in the season. The players have done superbly to climb out of relegation trouble, and it would be a shame if off-pitch incidents overshadowed those efforts. Communication has been clear and direct — now it’s down to the fans to match the team’s commitment and help push Pompey over the finish line with dignity and pride intact.
