Peterborough United Linked With Double Deadline Day Swoop

It is set to be a busy deadline day at Peterborough United with two incomings on the cards, according to Pete O’Rourke.

Wrexham Defender

Out-of-favour Wrexham defender Tom O’Connor is set to join Posh this afternoon. The Irishman has yet to feature for Phil Parkinson’s outfit this season, named in the matchday squad only twice in six games across all competitions. A mainstay in the side last season as the Red Dragons won promotion from League One, his 31 appearances at this level mean this would be an astute acquisition for Darren Ferguson’s side.

Formely at Southampton, O’Connor never made the grade at senior level at St Mary’s Stadium. But two loan spells with Gillingham, playing 67 times, convinced Burton Albion to sign him after his contract had expired with the Saints. Scoring five times in 21 games for the Brewers alerted Wrexham, and their spending power, even as a National League club, was enough to prize him away from East Staffordshire. With 110 appearances in North Wales, the 26-year-old was a key part of the side which won three successive promotions to the Championship.

Youth Prospect

Posh are well known for going down the young Non-League route regarding their forwards, but are set to shake it up a little with a loan deal being agreed for Chelsea forward Jimmy Jay Morgan. The highly-rated forward had two stints in Chelsea’s academy, leaving for Southampton inbetween. With the Saints, Morgan scored 27 at U16 level, adding a further thirteen strikes for the U18’s.

Signed in February 2023 for a £3m deal, the then seventeen-year-old left the South Coast with nine goal contributions in eight Premier League 2 games, along with being named in their senior matchday squad on three occasions. In the following campaign for Chelsea’s academy, Morgan netted nine times, including once in the EFL Trophy. Last term, a temporary exit to Gillingham was sanctioned following another prolific spell at youth level. Two goals in sixteen appearances for the Gills in the fourth tier show he is ready for another temporary stint away from Stamford Bridge.

Ougoings

No fewer than seven players are on Peterborough’s transfer list, heading into the final day of the window. Shrewsbury Town are leading the race for Bradley Ihionvien, but a handful of other players are awaiting departures from London Road. Midfielder Archie Collins is of interest from a third-tier rival, according to Darren Witcoop, though that depends on activity elsewhere. Ryan De Havilland, Chris Conn-Clarke, Jacob Wakeling, Nicholas Bilokapic and Will Blackmore are the five other Posh players seeking moves away from Peterborough today.

Site Opinion

Taking only one point from their opening six league games, it has been a dismal start to the campaign for Ferguson’s side. Signings are desperately needed given the outgoings this summer, and Jimmy Jay Morgan would be a great place to start. Tom O’Connor would also help shore up a defence that has shipped eleven goals already this term.
