Joel Randall was notably absent from Peterborough United’s squad during their narrow 3-2 defeat to Birmingham City, with manager Darren Ferguson revealing post-match that the winger is currently unsettled at the club.
Randall, who signed a significant three-year contract this past summer, has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction, leading to his exclusion from the team. That’s led manager Ferguson to openly criticise the player, leaving him with an uncertain future.
Ferguson didn’t shy away from addressing the situation: “He’s not happy at the football club, he’s made that clear,” the Posh boss confirmed. “His attitude in training reflects that, so he won’t be part of the squad until it improves. We’ve just given him a contract that makes him one of the highest-paid players here, and now he says he’s unhappy. If players don’t want to do the right things, they won’t be involved.”
Ferguson stressed the importance of commitment and effort, adding, “If he doesn’t want to train and show the right attitude, he won’t be involved. The chairman has given him a huge contract, and this is the situation we’re left with.” Randall’s future at Peterborough now hangs in the balance as the club navigates how best to resolve the matter.
On the pitch, Peterborough had a promising start but ultimately couldn’t hold onto a two-goal lead. Ricky-Jade Jones gave Posh the perfect opening, capitalising on a loose clearance by Birmingham goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell to score just four minutes in. Soon after, Emmanuel Fernandez added a second, powering home a header from a corner delivered by Jadel Katongo, putting the visitors firmly in control.
However, Birmingham clawed their way back into the game, benefitting from a bit of luck in the process. A speculative long-range effort from Jay Stansfield took a massive deflection off Peterborough defender Oscar Wallin, wrong-footing goalkeeper Will Norris and cutting the lead in half. With momentum shifting, Peterborough found it harder to maintain their grip on the match.
In the 66th minute, Birmingham equalised when Krystian Bielik bundled the ball into the net, with Peterborough’s appeals for handball falling on deaf ears. Despite some late pressure from Posh, including a series of corners, they couldn’t find a way through Birmingham’s defence, leaving them with a disappointing loss after a bright start.
After the game, Ferguson touched on the injury and selection dilemmas, but the focus remained on Randall’s exclusion. With key players sidelined, Ferguson made it clear that the team will push forward but needs full commitment from every member of the squad.

The situation with Joel Randall is frustrating for both the player and the club. Peterborough invested heavily in Randall, expecting him to be a key figure, but recent developments have thrown his future into doubt. It’s clear that Ferguson values hard work and the right attitude, and unless Randall changes his approach, he may find himself out of the picture altogether.
As for Peterborough’s performance against Birmingham, the team showed flashes of promise but ultimately lacked the composure to see out the game. The result leaves Posh searching for consistency, and with ongoing off-pitch distractions, Ferguson has his work cut out to get the squad back on track.
