Tariqe Fosu has told the Northampton Chronicle that he’d like to move permanently to Northampton after playing a crucial role in their 3-1 victory against Huddersfield.
Northampton took full advantage of Huddersfield’s early defensive error when a misjudged backpass by Michal Helik slipped past goalkeeper Lee Nicholls in the 18th minute, gifting the visitors an unexpected lead. Seven minutes later, Fosu was at the heart of a swift counter-attack, providing an inch-perfect pass to Cameron McGeehan, who calmly slotted home from the edge of the box to double the advantage. The Cobblers’ skipper, Jon Guthrie, came close to extending the lead further in the second half when his powerful header hit the underside of the crossbar, though the ball didn’t cross the line.
Fosu, who was Northampton’s standout performer, delivered his own moment of brilliance just before the hour mark. Muscling past Huddersfield’s Lasse Sorensen, he found himself one-on-one with Nicholls and showed composure to slip the ball through the keeper’s legs, putting Northampton 3-0 up and in full control. Though Huddersfield showed some life late on, with Josh Koroma pulling one back and then earning a penalty, Lee Burge’s save from Koroma’s spot-kick secured the Cobblers’ well-deserved victory.
Reflecting on the game, Fosu dismissed Huddersfield’s claims of a foul in the build-up to his goal, saying, “I didn’t think there was a foul for my goal. I just turned quicker than the defender and he’s actually clipped me. I would have been upset had the referee given a foul.” The 28-year-old winger also shared his thought process during the one-on-one with Nicholls, explaining, “I had a lot of time and they can be the most difficult ones because you have so much time to think about it. I did think about going round him, but he looked like he was ready for that, so I went through his legs.”
Fosu’s pace and intelligent positioning were integral to Northampton’s strategy against Huddersfield, and he highlighted the team’s approach after the match. “It was part of our game plan,” he noted. “They play quite high so we were looking for balls in behind, and I knew to make a run. For the second goal, Cam followed it up, I cut it back to him and he’s good at finishing those off.”
With his influence growing at Northampton, Fosu is eager to continue his momentum after recovering from a minor injury. “I’d say that was my proper first start, and I just want to build from here,” he said. “I’m a little bit behind fitness-wise, but I feel in good shape.” Fosu also revealed his growing connection with the club, adding, “I’m enjoying it here and I want to move up to the area and live somewhere local so I can be closer to the ground and see what Northampton is all about.”
