Mansfield Town’s Alfie Kilgour has opened up about his return to action after more than a year on the sidelines due to injury.
The 26-year-old defender made his comeback as a late substitute in The Stags’ 2-0 victory over Blackpool, marking a significant moment for both Kilgour and the club. This result also extended Mansfield’s run of three consecutive wins by the same scoreline, a testament to their strong form in League One.
Kilgour, who last played in August 2023 during a League Two clash against Doncaster Rovers, had been out with a ruptured Achilles tendon, a devastating injury that sidelined him for over a year. The injury occurred just 17 minutes into the match, and it later emerged that he would require a long rehabilitation period, missing out on Mansfield’s promotion to League One. The defender finally made his much-anticipated return to the pitch with just two minutes of normal time remaining against Blackpool, replacing two-goal hero Will Evans.
Speaking to the Mansfield and Ashfield Chad, Kilgour expressed the joy and relief of stepping back onto the field: “Saturday was a very special day for me – 418 days it had been since I last ran on a football pitch at Doncaster.”
A Long Journey Back to Fitness
Kilgour’s return was not something he had been expecting so soon. After training on the Friday before the match, Mansfield manager Nigel Clough approached him about the possibility of being included in the squad due to a few injuries within the team. “It came a bit unexpectedly,” Kilgour explained. “The gaffer pulled me and asked how I was. I said I was good, and he told me I would be in the squad and on the bench. So to get a little five-minute cameo was a great moment.”
The defender’s return was met with an overwhelming reception from the Mansfield supporters, something that clearly touched Kilgour. “I got an absolutely unbelievable reception from the fans. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. To have to wait so long for that connection with the fans has been heartbreaking for me.”
Kilgour made 24 appearances for Mansfield before his injury, having joined from his boyhood club, Bristol Rovers, in January 2023. Despite his lengthy absence, the club showed faith in him by offering a contract extension, keeping him at Field Mill until the end of this season.

Kilgour’s Unique Role in His Return Match
In a surprising move, Nigel Clough deployed Kilgour as a makeshift striker for the final minutes against Blackpool. Kilgour explained the tactical decision: “I knew firstly there was a job to do. I was told I was going on up front and to run around and get stuck in. I had a feeling of calmness and peace, and I was also quite emotional.”
Reflecting on the challenging journey back to fitness, Kilgour admitted, “I have had quite a few dark times, there in the gym by myself, and suffering pain and being told by surgeons I might not get back to where I was. So to finally run out onto a pitch in a Mansfield Town kit for League One football was all I had dreamt of.”
Now back on the field, Kilgour is eager to put his injury troubles behind him and return to regular action. “I’m glad it’s out the way now with that emotion, and I now want to do a job and be back among the battle,” he added.
Our View
It’s always inspiring to see a player return to the pitch after a long injury layoff, and Alfie Kilgour’s story is no exception. After more than a year away from competitive football, Kilgour’s brief appearance against Blackpool marked the beginning of what is hopefully a successful comeback. His candid remarks about the mental toll of his recovery shed light on the challenges athletes face when sidelined for extended periods.
Mansfield Town’s unexpected rise in League One has been one of the season’s feel-good stories, and Kilgour’s return adds another layer of optimism. With a tough set of fixtures ahead against strong defences like Exeter City and Stevenage, followed by a clash with high-flying Birmingham City, Kilgour’s experience will be invaluable. As The Stags aim to continue their impressive form, Kilgour’s reintegration into the team will be key in their bid to remain competitive in the third tier.
