Mansfield Town are preparing to leave their final transfer business until the last moments of the January window, with manager Nigel Clough hinting at potential late swoops depending on injury updates and player availability.
The Stags have already brought in Tottenham midfielder Matthew Craig on loan for the remainder of the season and are chasing another loan deal, though Clough admits progress has been slow.
“It is unlikely there will be any movement this week, but maybe the week after,” said Clough.
Injury Updates Dictating Transfer Activity
A significant factor in Mansfield’s transfer plans will be the injury status of key strikers Rhys Oates and Lee Gregory. Gregory is awaiting scan results on a recurring knee issue, while Oates, sidelined with a long-term injury, is expected to resume light training soon.
“We will pursue [a striker] more after the weekend when we find out a bit more about those two,” Clough stated. “It only leaves us a few days, but it will be enough time if we need one.”
Clough emphasised that any incoming player must bring quality and competition to the squad, which he described as “relatively injury-free” for the first time in a while.
Keanu Baccus and Frazer Blake-Tracy are set to return to training, boosting Mansfield’s defensive and midfield options.
Outgoings and Loan Moves
Striker James Gale has departed on loan to Boston United after a disappointing stint at Solihull Moors. The move reunites him with former Mansfield boss Graham Coughlan.
“Graham will be aware of him, and we are very happy for him to go and try to help out there,” said Clough.
Mansfield are also looking to facilitate moves for “one or two lads” who are currently surplus to requirements, potentially freeing up space for new arrivals.
Squad Depth Provides Optimism
Despite their cautious approach in the market, the Stags are buoyed by the return of key players. Gregory’s knee issue, while concerning, appears manageable, and Oates’ recovery is progressing.
Clough remains optimistic about the squad’s strength:
“It’s just about bringing in a good player to give us competition in certain areas.”
Site Opinion
Mansfield Town’s measured approach to the transfer window reflects their confidence in the current squad, bolstered by returning players. However, the uncertainty surrounding Oates and Gregory’s fitness could force a late move for a striker.
Clough’s focus on quality over quantity is commendable, but leaving business until the final days carries risks. A successful late addition could strengthen Mansfield’s promotion push, while failure to act may leave them vulnerable if injuries persist.
The Stags must act decisively as the deadline approaches to ensure they remain competitive in the League Two play-off race.
