Matt Bloomfield says his Luton Town side are embracing the final run of the Championship season with optimism and clarity, as they prepare for a high-stakes fixture away at Hull City this weekend.
With eight matches left to play, the Hatters sit four points from safety. But while the pressure is undeniable, the manager believes his squad are channelling it positively after a productive fortnight off over the international break.
Luton’s last outing was a frustrating 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough – a game in which they created a host of chances but were unable to convert. Despite the missed opportunities, Bloomfield insists it was one of the team’s most complete performances yet under his leadership.
The recent break offered a timely opportunity for recovery and refinement. Several players were involved in international action, including Thelo Aasgaard (Norway) and Izzy Jones (Guyana), while others remained in Bedfordshire for a mix of training and rest.
“The run-in we relish” – Bloomfield on Luton’s belief
Now, with trips to Stoke, Derby and Hull still to come – plus key home games against Leeds, Blackburn, Coventry and Bristol City – the manager believes the Hatters have both the physical preparation and mental steel to stay in the fight.
“If the feeling in the building and the noise in the building is anything to go by then they’re feeling good about themselves. The standard of training has been very good… we’re disappointed with a draw against a team that’s trying to get promoted, so I think that shows you where we’re at right now.”
Bloomfield says his players have responded well to his approach since his appointment. He has stressed the importance of consistency, structure, and repeating patterns until they become second nature. That tactical clarity, he believes, is now being reflected in matches.
“If you look at the last block of four games, I think it looks more like a team we want it to look like,” he said, pointing to improved attacking sequences and team shape.
Despite frustration over missed chances against Boro – with Aasgaard, Elijah Adebayo and Carlton Morris all spurning opportunities – Bloomfield insists the confidence in the group remains intact. His message is simple: keep believing, stay relentless, and take it one game at a time.
He has also emphasised the importance of tactical adaptability ahead of their trip to the MKM Stadium, recognising that Hull City present a different challenge altogether.
“Away at Hull is going to be completely different,” he said. “We have to take the good bits that we can implement again and be tactically astute. A different surface, a different team – we’ve got to adjust and bring our best.”
Site opinion
This is a manager who clearly understands both the technical and emotional side of a relegation scrap. Bloomfield isn’t downplaying the challenge – but nor is he allowing pressure to take control of the narrative. The real test will come in how Luton respond in tight moments, especially away from home. But with a clear philosophy, improving performances, and a core of players starting to buy in, there’s a sense the Hatters may yet turn this survival bid into a success story. With Bloomfield at the helm, they have a fighter steering the ship – and a plan in place.
