League One Team Of The Week – Matchday 2

Matchday 2 in League One had a bit of everything. There was a dramatic comeback at Oakwell, statement wins from promotion contenders, and a couple of clinical clean sheets away from home. Set pieces again proved decisive, while wide players delivered the moments that changed games.

The EFL Hub’s Team of the Week is full of players who thrived in those big moments. Selections below are based on impact and match state as well as the headline numbers.

Let’s see who made the cut…

Owen Goodman (Huddersfield Town), Goalkeeper

Composed throughout at the Select Car Leasing Stadium and part of a well-managed away clean sheet. Huddersfield limited Reading’s high-quality looks, then struck late through Jack Whatmough and Cameron Ashia to bank the points.

Nathan Asiimwe (AFC Wimbledon), Right Back

Provided the insurance goal on 77 minutes to finish off Lincoln after the match swung with a first-half red card. Energetic on the outside of the Wombles’ back line and rewarded with the decisive second in a 2–0 win.

Eoin Toal (Bolton Wanderers), Centre Back

Set Bolton on their way with a first-half header and helped shut out Plymouth in a controlled 2–0 victory. Wanderers restricted the visitors to no shots on target, underlining the centre-back’s influence at both ends.

Mads Juel Andersen (Luton Town), Centre Back

Broke the deadlock on the hour at Peterborough and anchored a clean sheet as Luton made it two wins from two with a professional away display.

Dan Butler (Stevenage), Left Back

Part of a disciplined back four that kept Rotherham at arm’s length and protected a 1–0 lead earned before the break. Stevenage allowed zero shots on target, which tells the story of the defensive control.

Reece Cole (Exeter City), Central Midfielder

Opened the scoring after four minutes to set the tone in a comprehensive 4–1 win over Blackpool, then kept Exeter on the front foot with progressive play before being withdrawn late.

Davis Keillor-Dunn (Barnsley), Attacking Midfielder

Dragged Barnsley level on 63 minutes in a comeback from 0–2 down against Burton, a key swing before the stoppage-time winner arrived. Constantly threatened the box from the half-spaces.

Jordan Clark (Luton Town), Central Midfielder

Secured the result at Peterborough with an 85-minute strike and knitted together Luton’s transitions in a tight contest that opened up after the hour.

Jack Diamond (Stockport County), Right Wing

Curled in Stockport’s second just after the break at Wycombe to cap a slick counter, then worked tirelessly on the break as County saw it out.

David McGoldrick (Barnsley), Centre Forward

The match-winner deep into stoppage time completed a full-blooded Oakwell turnaround. Experience and movement told when it mattered most.

Josh Koroma (Leyton Orient), Left Wing

Stepped up with a composed finish on the hour to make Orient’s control count in a 2–0 victory over Wigan, a game that later saw the visitors reduced to ten.
