Gustavo Puerta has revealed his ambition to move to a bigger club this summer, following an impressive loan spell with Hull City in the Championship.
The 21-year-old Colombian joined Hull from Bayer Leverkusen last year and has gradually become a regular under manager Rubén Sellés. After initially waiting until mid-October to make his debut, Puerta has since racked up 26 appearances in a role that has showcased his composure, energy, and eye for a pass.
Puerta moved to Leverkusen from Bogotá FC in January 2023 but failed to break through in Xabi Alonso’s side during their title-winning campaign. A loan to 1. FC Nürnberg followed before he made the switch to England for the 2024/25 season.
“The Championship is one of the toughest” – Puerta reflects on English test
Speaking in Colombia to El VBar de Caracol Radio, with quotes relayed by AS, Puerta discussed both his growth in Europe and his future goals.
“They’re two different worlds. I was in my country with my family, my friends, the food, and I arrived in a country with different people, climate, and food. That’s the hardest part for South Americans, but it’s all in the mind and the desire to succeed.”
Puerta highlighted the mental toughness required to adjust, but believes he’s now fully settled in Europe and is focused on making a big career leap.
“I’ve already completed years in Europe… I’ll keep working and hope to move to a bigger club next season to continue demonstrating my quality.”
He went on to describe the Championship as a demanding environment, noting the constant pressure, lack of space, and physical nature of the league.
“The Championship could be the sixth toughest league,” he said. “It’s very competitive, every game is tough… There’s no chance to walk or think much.”
The midfielder also praised his current boss, saying that working under a Spanish-speaking coach has aided his progress significantly, both in communication and tactical integration.
With his contract at Bayer Leverkusen running until 2028, the German giants must now weigh up Puerta’s future. His performances in England have surely caught attention, and a permanent move – either back to Germany or elsewhere – may be on the cards.
Site opinion
Gustavo Puerta’s ambition is clear – and with good reason. He has adapted well to the challenge of English football and is showcasing the kind of qualities that could translate to a higher level. For Hull, his progress has been a major plus, but they’ll likely be bracing themselves for interest once the window opens. Whether his future lies in Germany or beyond, Puerta looks set to climb the ladder sooner rather than later.
