Conor Hourihane believes goalkeeper Kieren Flavell deserves every bit of attention he’s receiving — but has reminded the 21-year-old that staying grounded is key as Barnsley look to finish their season strongly.
Reports this week linked Flavell with summer interest from Sheffield United and Fulham, with the young shot-stopper out of contract in a few months. His emergence has come in difficult circumstances, stepping in for injured keepers Jackson Smith and Joe Gauci, but his form has turned heads at Oakwell and beyond.
Reward for professionalism and hard work
“He’s done really, really well,” said Hourihane. “I’ve given him an opportunity and he’s taken it, giving me everything he’s got. From now until the end of the season, he’s got a great opportunity to keep playing.”
Hourihane didn’t deny the outside interest — and nor was he surprised by it. “That comes with the territory. When a young lad is doing well and taking his opportunity, there’s going to be some speculation. He’s a good lad, wants to learn, and loves being at the football club.”
Born in Pontefract, Flavell is a product of Barnsley’s academy and has worked his way up through the youth ranks. His emergence this season has come at a crucial time for the club, who are still fighting for promotion despite recent setbacks.
“Now is not the time to look around”
While Hourihane acknowledged Flavell’s future might lie higher up the football pyramid, he urged the player to block out the distractions for now.
“He’s got people in the background looking around — that’s how football works. But he needs to stay focused. He’s come up through our academy and wants to be here, and right now that’s what matters most.”
Hourihane added that Flavell’s mentality has impressed him as much as his goalkeeping. “He’s grasped the opportunity. It’s easy to lose focus with the rumours, but he’s been brilliant around the place.”
Site opinion
Flavell’s rise could hardly be better timed. He’s handled the pressure of first-team football with maturity, and interest from the Championship and Premier League only underlines how far he’s come. But Hourihane’s message is a wise one — finish strong first. If Flavell maintains his form and focus, the right opportunity will come, whether at Oakwell or beyond.
