Harrogate Town Secure Prolific Striker Amid Chesterfield Interest

Harrogate Town have completed the signing of Tom Cursons from Ilkeston Town on a two-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The prolific striker, who attracted interest from Chesterfield and other EFL clubs, will now embark on his first full-time professional contract in League Two.

Cursons’ Remarkable Season at Ilkeston

Cursons, 23, departs Ilkeston Town as the Northern Premier League’s top scorer, having netted 23 goals in all competitions this season. His performances drew attention from several clubs, including Derby County, Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley, and Peterborough United. However, it is Harrogate who have secured the services of the talented forward.

Speaking about his move, Cursons expressed his excitement:

“I’m delighted, the chance to play full-time football in the EFL is something I’ve dreamed of, so to be here now with it all signed feels really good.”

Harrogate’s Strategic Move

Lloyd Kerry, Harrogate Town’s head of player recruitment, praised Cursons’ attributes and potential:

“We’ve been aware of Tom for a while now, he’s got a great reputation as a goalscorer, is current top scorer in his league, and we’re delighted he’s chosen to sign for us. We like his profile, he’s robust, mobile and we were really impressed with what we saw when we’ve been to watch him.”

Ilkeston’s Perspective

Ilkeston Town chairman Andrew Nally revealed the club’s careful approach to the transfer:

“Over the past few months interest has been growing in the player from the footballing world, but the club didn’t simply want to sell to the first bidder, nor necessarily to the highest bidder, and we have carefully chosen this deal, in what we think is right for all parties.”

Chesterfield’s Missed Opportunity

For Chesterfield, missing out on Cursons will come as a disappointment after reportedly submitting a bid for the striker. The Spireites have been actively searching for reinforcements but will now need to look elsewhere to bolster their attacking options.

Site Opinion

Cursons’ move to Harrogate Town is a testament to the club’s strong recruitment strategy. His proven goal-scoring ability in the Northern Premier League and his readiness to step up into the EFL make him an exciting addition. While Chesterfield and other suitors will lament missing out, Cursons now has a prime opportunity to prove himself at a higher level and could become a key figure for Harrogate as they aim to climb the League Two table.
