Former Crawley Town Man Set for Coaching Switch

Veteran midfielder Nicky Adams has confirmed he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season, closing the curtain on an impressive 20-year career. 

Adams, who made the most league appearances of his career at Crawley Town, had a rich and varied career. He made nearly 600 appearances across the EFL, but has decided to step away from playing after a final spell with Bury. Having previously also represented Rotherham United, Leicester City, Brentford and several other clubs, Adams has become a much-admired figure in English football circles.

Long-serving professional says goodbye

Speaking about his decision, to leave Bury, Adams said he feels the timing is perfect as he moves fully into coaching, having already been preparing for the transition alongside his playing duties.

“I think it’s perfect timing for me. I’m learning the coaching side of it. I’ve been doing that for the last few years, and I’ve got a big opportunity to go and do that full-time now.”

Bury manager Dave McNabb led the tributes, describing Adams as “a leader amongst men” and highlighting the vital role he has played in the club’s dressing room. McNabb credited Adams with driving positive relationships and maintaining high standards throughout his time at the club.

Adams’ final games at Bury have been emotional, with supporters and players alike acknowledging the legacy of a player who gave his all every time he pulled on a shirt.

Across a glittering lower-league career, Adams was known for his energy, creativity and commitment. From helping Northampton Town to promotion glory, to guiding Crawley Town and shining for Brentford and Leicester, his impact at numerous clubs will be long remembered.

Now ready to focus fully on his coaching career, Adams will look to pass on the lessons of a lifetime in football to the next generation.
