In a decisive move to bolster their injury-hit squad, Northampton Town are on the verge of signing former Lincoln City defender TJ Eyoma.
Sources close to EFL Hub have revealed the former Spurs man has been training with the Sixfields outfit, with a view to penning a short term deal. The 24-year-old, who offers versatility across both central defence and full-back positions, could be announced as a Cobblers player within hours.
Eyoma has been a key figure for Lincoln City over the past four seasons, where he made a total of 148 appearances, including 123 starts, proving his reliability and skill at League One level. A product of Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, Eyoma made his senior debut as a substitute in Spurs’ FA Cup win over Tranmere Rovers, but it was at Lincoln where he cemented his professional career.
He joined the Imps on loan in January 2020 but left in March as COVID gripped the country without making an appearance. He was back for their 20/21 campaign, helping the Imps to the League One play-off final. The following season, he was announced as a permanent signing, on the pitch prior to Lincoln playing Bolton.
Following two changes of manager, Eyoma found himself on the fringes at Lincoln, and despite a couple of goals last season, one of those against Northampton, he was released in the summer. He’s since been without a club, but was a part of the PFA squad over the summer, playing a number if friendlies infront of scouts.
Our View: Eyoma Signing a Smart Move for the Cobblers’ Depth
The imminent signing of TJ Eyoma is a shrewd decision for Northampton Town, offering both immediate relief for an injury-plagued squad and a long-term boost in defensive stability. Eyoma’s experience at Lincoln City, where he made 148 appearances across multiple seasons, demonstrates his resilience and skill—qualities that will undoubtedly benefit the Cobblers as they face a gruelling schedule.
His versatility, being able to play both as a central defender and full-back, provides manager Jon Brady with flexibility in dealing with unexpected lineup changes, which are inevitable given the team’s recent run of injuries. In a competitive league, building a squad that can withstand these demands is crucial, and Eyoma’s signing reflects the Cobblers’ commitment to staying competitive, even in challenging times.
