Exeter City have confirmed that midfielder Tom Dean has returned from his loan at Plymouth Parkway and signed a new deal with the club — a one-year contract extension with a further year option.
Dean has enjoyed a breakout campaign in non-league football, starring in the Southern League where he registered 43 appearances, scoring five goals and contributing an outstanding 16 assists. The 19-year-old’s consistent output made him a standout for Parkway and a clear candidate for reintegration into the Grecians’ first-team picture.
City manager Gary Caldwell has brought the teenager back for the final weeks of the 2024/25 season, confirming that Dean will train closely with the first team and could feature in the closing fixtures.
“I’ll Be Ready” – Dean Eager To Seize First-Team Chance
Reflecting on his return and new contract, Dean said the opportunity to work under Caldwell again and the recognition of his development meant a great deal.
“And having spoken to the manager here he said he was really impressed with how I applied myself this year… and he has said he wants me to work closely with the first team for the final few weeks of the season.”
Dean’s progress has been underpinned by strong showings in both senior and youth competitions. He played a key part in Exeter’s Premier League Cup group stage triumph, scoring five goals and helping the Under-21s go unbeaten. Combined with his performances at Parkway, it’s clear why the club sees a future in him.
The midfielder described the season as “hugely developmental,” crediting the contrast between physical non-league fixtures and technically demanding academy games for improving his all-round abilities.
His return gives Caldwell another option in midfield heading into the season finale, and more importantly, the contract signals faith in Dean’s long-term potential at St James Park.
Dean first made his senior debut in last year’s EFL Trophy and is eager to add to that appearance tally if given the chance. His recent performances suggest he is ready to take that step.

Tom Dean’s story is the kind every club wants from its academy system — a player thriving out on loan, returning stronger, and now knocking on the door of the first team. His blend of creativity, work rate and humility makes him a great fit for Exeter City’s footballing identity. The contract extension is deserved, and if he keeps progressing at this rate, fans may see a lot more of Dean next season — not just as “one of our own”, but as one of the starters.
