Exclusive: Former Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough Man Seals League One Switch

EFL Hub has learned that former Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough defender Adam Reach has secured a deadline day deal with an unnamed League One club.

Reach has been out of contract all summer, hooking up with the PFA squad to retain fitness after leaving Wycombe Wanderers. Before his brief spell in League One, he was an established Championship player, with over 350 second-tier appearances across three clubs.

The 32-year-old will now ply his trade in League One, with a promotion-chasing side believed to have acquired his signature on a 1+1 deal. The deal is understood to have been signed and sealed, with the club now just waiting to make an announcement.

Adam Reach Career

Reach came through the Middlesbrough academy and made his senior debut in 2011, scoring on his first appearance against Doncaster Rovers. Loan spells at Darlington, Shrewsbury Town, Bradford City and Preston North End gave him valuable experience, with notable contributions in League One and the Championship.

In 2016, Reach moved to Sheffield Wednesday in a deal reported to be worth around £5 million. He went on to make more than 200 appearances, gaining recognition for spectacular long-range goals that twice earned Championship Goal of the Month awards. He was named Wednesday’s Player of the Year in 2018 after a season of consistent performances and creativity from midfield.

Reach later joined West Bromwich Albion in 2021, adding 71 appearances across three seasons, before switching to Wycombe Wanderers in February 2025. At international level, he represented England at under-19 and under-20 level, playing at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Over his career to mid-2025, he has made nearly 500 senior appearances in domestic competitions, scoring more than 40 goals.

Site Opinion

Adam Reach is still only 32, and any top end League One club would find him an asset. He looked competent and assured during his Wycombe spell last season, and that coupled with his efforts to stay fit over the summer make him an attractive prospect.

The timing is interesting – free agents can be signed after the deadline, so for a club to move today suggests they’re either protecting themselves, or Reach has been holding out for a move higher up, before agreeing to a League One switch. Either way, if he can recreate some of his Hillsborough form on the ground of League One, he’ll be a strong player this season.
