Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has offered high praise for teenager Will Flint, declaring the 19-year-old “more than ready” to play a key role in the club’s push for promotion from League Two.
Flint has returned to South Yorkshire following a productive loan spell at Darlington, where he earned plaudits for his composure, aggression, and versatility. Capable of playing both in central defence and midfield, his performances have put him in contention for a place in the starting line-up as Rovers head into the season’s defining fixtures.
The timing could hardly be more critical. With first-choice defender Joseph Olowu sidelined for the rest of the campaign and concerns over squad fitness ahead of Tuesday’s clash at Salford City, McCann may have no choice but to call upon Flint as the games stack up.
Rovers Turn To Youth
Speaking ahead of the match, McCann expressed full confidence in Flint’s readiness for the step up, highlighting his physical and technical qualities as key assets.
“He’s more than ready,” McCann enthused to the Free Press. “He’s an excellent young player, Will… He’s quick, aggressive, can handle the ball and is a good size. I’ve got real high hopes for Will, I really do.”
Flint has made four senior appearances for Rovers, but his involvement is expected to increase as the club continues its chase for a top-three finish. The current injuries may fast-track that opportunity, with McCann stressing that Flint won’t be out of place.
It’s not just youth stepping up for Doncaster — the supporters are playing their part too. More than 1,000 away tickets have been sold for tonight’s game, with nearly 1,200 already snapped up for Friday’s trip to Tranmere Rovers. It’s a level of commitment that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Rovers boss.
“The fans have been outstanding, they really have… The hardy ones that come to the away games at all times up and down the country are true, real Rovers supporters.”
McCann pointed to the club’s league-best away form as proof of the fans’ influence, saying their vocal backing and energy give the squad a vital edge on the road.
With three tough away days still ahead, that continued support could be the deciding factor in what is shaping up to be a thrilling end to the season for the South Yorkshire club.
