‘Determined To Find The Right Successor’ – Shrewsbury Town Announce Major Changes

Shrewsbury Town has appointed Duncan Montgomery as the club’s new vice-chairman following a board reshuffle.

Montgomery, formerly the finance director, has been a key financial contributor alongside chairman Roland Wycherley, particularly after the club announced £3 million in losses earlier this year.

In the restructuring, Liam Dooley, appointed as chief executive in October 2023, has been elevated to the role of director. The club’s official statement emphasised that attracting investment remains a priority as they look to secure the long-term future of the club.

“The board have worked tirelessly to return the club to a sustainable financial model and are continuing to make strong progress. Attracting genuine investment and succession is the most important priority,” the statement read.

“The chairman is committed to returning financial stability at the club, which was previously recognised by the EFL for many years, and determined to find the right successor to leave the football club in the best possible hands for now and for future generations.”

Andrew Crane has replaced Montgomery as the new director of finance. Chairman Wycherley remains focused on restoring financial stability, describing the past year as “the most challenging and difficult since my appointment as chairman in 1996.”

Shrewsbury’s accounts revealed that by June 2023, the club had £81,184 in cash reserves, a significant drop from the over £1.5 million held just 12 months earlier.

This news hasn’t been received well by Salop fans. One social media post said ‘Don’t think they can be trusted at all. Jokers and liars’ and that seems to sum up what people think of the club and it’s direction right now.

They squeezed a win recently, but they’re already looking like they’re in for a season of struggle, and this really isn’t the news fans were hoping for. A takeover? Sure, but not the appointment of someone they feel is already part of a regime that has overseen the overall deterioration of the club.

There are some unhappy Salop fans this evening, with people feeling that this move is simply a case of rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.
