Walsall have bolstered their squad with the signing of young defender Rico Browne from Birmingham City, a deal that surprisingly involved a transfer fee.
The 20-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the League Two side, with an option for an additional season. Initially, Browne’s departure from Birmingham was expected to be without cost, but it was later revealed that Walsall had to pay compensation to his former club. This is due to the fact that Birmingham offered Browne a contract extension before his departure, securing their right to compensation when he opted to join Walsall instead.
Browne never made a senior appearance for Birmingham, but his time at St Andrew’s was notable, having joined from Elche six years ago. He progressed through the youth ranks, featuring for the Under-18 and Under-21 sides. His most significant experience came last season when he was loaned to National League North side Rushall Olympic, where he made 18 appearances and scored a goal. His performances during that loan spell caught the attention of Walsall, leading to his eventual move.
Ben Sadler, Walsall’s CEO, confirmed that after Browne chose to join the Saddlers, the two clubs reached a financial settlement. The compensation allowed Birmingham to recoup some value from the departure of a young player who had been part of their development setup for several years.
Walsall’s head coach, Mat Sadler, was impressed by Browne’s potential and was eager to bring him into the squad. Sadler had been keeping tabs on the young defender’s progress and highlighted the importance of his loan spell in demonstrating his ability to perform in senior football.
“Rico has been with us for a couple of weeks, and he’s a player I was already aware of,” said Sadler. “His loan at Rushall showed his ability to perform in senior football, and I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring him in. We’re looking forward to seeing how he develops with us.”
Browne, meanwhile, is excited about the opportunity to prove himself at Walsall and spoke about his playing style and ambitions. “I’m really excited to be here,” he said. “I see myself as a ball-playing defender. I like to get aggressive in my challenges but also take care of possession and help build from the back. I’m eager to get started and show the fans what I can do.”
With EFL clearance pending, Browne could make his debut for Walsall in their upcoming League Two clash against Salford City. This move represents a chance for him to gain regular first-team experience and showcase his ability at a higher level than before.
