Colchester United Boss Bags League Two Award After March Revival

Colchester United manager Danny Cowley has been named Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month for March after guiding the U’s through a five-game winning streak that has reignited their promotion push.

Cowley oversaw 1-0 wins over MK Dons, Chesterfield and Cheltenham to start the month, before a 2-1 victory over Port Vale and a commanding 3-0 result against Fleetwood at home rounded off a fantastic run. Despite late defeats to Bradford and Grimsby, Colchester secured 15 points from seven matches—form that has lifted them to within touching distance of the play-off places.

Club Effort

They now sit eighth in the table, just three points behind Grimsby Town with five games remaining. With momentum on their side, Colchester head to struggling Newport County next.

“Team effort, club effort really. The players have been brilliant, congratulations to the staff for the way they’ve supported the players. And of course our supporters, they’ve been incredible and have played a part in this award. It’s testament to everybody.

“I like them in March and April. If we get the one in April you might see me celebrate. The team has got better. It shows the team grows, develops, and improves as the season unfolds.

“You’re always trying to peak at the business end of the season I suppose. We had a pretty good March. We didn’t like the way we finished March.

“We’ve been more happy with the way we’ve started April, four points in two games has been credit to the group with so many things going against us.”

Cowley has long been admired for his organisational skills and ability to get the best out of limited squads, and March has proven once again why he remains a respected figure in the lower leagues. Since taking over at Colchester, his impact has been felt both on the pitch and behind the scenes.

In a nod to his family’s sporting culture, Cowley shared that the latest addition to his trophy cabinet will join a growing wall of memorabilia at home—featuring shirts and awards from his spells at Concord Rangers, Braintree, Lincoln, Huddersfield, Portsmouth, and now Colchester. Even his daughter’s England shirt and his wife’s athletics achievements have pride of place.

His focus, though, remains firmly on the present.

The judging panel for the award included Danny Wilson, Don Goodman and Sky Bet trader Ivor Davies, who praised Cowley’s consistency and composure through a tough month.

Site opinion

Danny Cowley is doing what Danny Cowley does best—building momentum at exactly the right time. Colchester looked like mid-table material just weeks ago, but they’re now a serious threat to break into the top seven. His leadership has galvanised the club, and if they can maintain this energy into April, no one will want to draw them in the play-offs. One award down—he may just be eyeing a bigger prize.
