Chesterfield midfielder John Fleck is feeling optimistic as he believes his injury troubles are now behind him after a challenging year.
The 33-year-old, who recently joined The Spireites following his summer release from Blackburn Rovers, has spoken about how surgery has resolved lingering issues caused by a metal plate in his shin. He claims he feels the best he has ‘in years’ which will be a huge boost to Paul Cook’s side.
Fleck, who has played for clubs like Sheffield United and Rangers, revealed how a misfitting metal plate from an earlier surgery had caused months of pain and hindered his performances. “When I had my first surgery at Sheffield United, I got a metal plate put in my leg after my small fracture, but the plate ended up being too big,” Fleck told BBC Radio Sheffield, via the Derbyshire Times. “I was training through pain for maybe 5-6 months, which wasn’t great.”
The injury woes persisted during his time at Blackburn, where he received another blow to the same leg. “Every time I got hit in that area, the plate was just whacking off my bone,” Fleck explained, detailing how Blackburn arranged for a second surgery that finally rectified the issue. “A smaller plate has been put in, and since it was taken out, I felt like my old self again straight away.”
Now fully recovered, Fleck is eager to return to the pitch and could make his debut for Chesterfield this weekend against Port Vale. Reflecting on his recovery, Fleck added, “I have come through the other side, and I am feeling the best I have felt in probably a year.”
Fleck began his professional career at Rangers, where he emerged as a talented young midfielder. After a series of promising performances, he moved to Coventry City in the summer, where he played an influential role over four years. During his time at Coventry, Fleck made 182 appearances and scored eight goals, becoming a key player in their League One campaigns.
In the summer, Fleck signed for Sheffield United, where his career truly took off. He became a vital part of the team that won promotion to the Premier League, contributing significantly with both goals and assists. Over several seasons, Fleck made over 200 appearances for the Blades, scoring crucial goals and helping them secure a top-half finish in their first season back in the Premier League.
After leaving Sheffield United, Fleck joined Blackburn Rovers, but injury issues plagued his time at Ewood Park.

Fleck’s return to full fitness is a massive boost for Chesterfield. With his Premier League experience and knowledge of the game, Fleck could become a key figure for the Spireites this season. His recovery from a long-term injury is not just a personal triumph but also a significant advantage for a club aiming for success in League Two.
That said, it will be important for Chesterfield to manage his minutes carefully. After such a lengthy spell out due to injury, easing him back into regular match action could ensure he stays fit for the duration of the season, providing much-needed leadership in their promotion push.
