Carlisle United Sanction Player Exit

Ethan Robson has joined Gateshead on loan from Carlisle United for the rest of the season, in a move designed to give the midfielder a fresh start after injury problems curtailed his campaign in League Two.

The 28-year-old heads to the National League in search of game time, having made just eight appearances for Carlisle since signing from MK Dons last summer. A series of niggling injuries kept Robson sidelined during key parts of the season, and despite being back to full fitness, opportunities at Brunton Park have remained limited.

Now, the midfielder will reunite with Gateshead boss Carl Magnay, who briefly worked alongside him at Carlisle, in the hope of reigniting his form as Gateshead push for the National League play-offs.

“It’s been a bit of a tough spell with the injuries and stuff, but I’m over that now and I’m ready to kick on. You’ve got to aim high. Obviously, we want to be in the play-offs… There’s no reason why we can’t win those games.”

Opportunity to rebuild

Robson brings a wealth of EFL experience to the north-east club, having played for Sunderland, Grimsby, Blackpool and MK Dons across League One and League Two. A composed presence in midfield, he has been known for his ability to distribute the ball and get around the pitch – traits Gateshead will hope to harness during the run-in.

Speaking to the club’s media, Robson emphasised his excitement about linking up with Magnay and praised the intensity in training: “Training today was really good. You can see the lads are at it. It’s been a tough few games for us, but we’ll be looking to turn that around straight away.”

Carlisle’s sporting director Rob Clarkson echoed the sentiment, stating: “This is a good opportunity for Ethan to get some much-needed football for the remainder of the season. We wish him well and expect him back for pre-season ready to go again.”

Gateshead currently sit just outside the play-off places and face Barnet this weekend in a key clash. With Robson potentially available for selection, his addition could not have come at a better time as the club aims to finish strong in what has been a highly competitive National League campaign.

Site opinion

This loan represents a fresh chapter for Ethan Robson at a stage in his career where he needs minutes, momentum and confidence. With his Sunderland roots and Football League experience, Gateshead are acquiring a player capable of making an immediate impact. If he stays fit, he may not only play a key role in Gateshead’s play-off bid, but also return to Carlisle in the summer ready to stake his claim once more.
