Burton Albion Close To Signing Wrexham Midfielder

Burton Albion are reportedly closing in on the deadline-day signing of versatile Wrexham midfielder George Evans, as reported by Pete O’Rourke.

The 30-year-old is reportedly heading to the Pirelli Stadium after struggling for game time in the Championship.

A Seasoned Professional

Born in Greater Manchester, Evans is a product of Manchester City’s academy which he joined at the age of six, spending over a decade in their youth system. His sole senior appearance came in 2013, substituting in a League Cup tie against Sunderland. In the search for regular game time, he had a succession of loans at to Crewe Alexandra in 2013-14, Scunthorpe United in 2015, and Walsall 2015-16.

In January 2016, Evans signed permanently with Reading, making 61 Championship appearances before transferring to Derby County in 2018 for £1 million. He later joined Millwall in 2021. Over this time, he reached over 140 Championship games, showcasing his versatility as a defensive midfielder, centre-back, or right-back.

Evans surprisingly dropped from the Championship to sign a two-year deal with Wrexham in September 2023, playing 27 League Two matches, contributing to their promotion to the third tier. A serious ankle injury against Stevenage last year led to Evans requiring surgery, and a two-year contract extension in July last year emphasising his impact at the club.

With over 200 EFL appearances, Evans brings a wealth of experience from his stints across England’s top three tiers. His move to Burton Albion provides an opportunity to re-establish himself in a competitive League One setting.

A Lacklustre Start

Currently languishing in 18th place in League One with just four points from five games, Burton Albion’s season has been a disappointing affair as of yet. Under manager Gary Bowyer, the Brewers are grappling with a three-match losing streak, highlighting defensive frailties and a lack of goals and attacking moments.

Burton’s deadline day signing Alex Hartridge from Wycombe Wanderers could prove pivotal, as he offers defensive stability with his experience in the league.

Other new additions like Jón Daði Böðvarsson, have yet to set a tone in the team. The return of attacking midfielder JJ McKiernan on loan from Lincoln City will look to inspire the team. However, Bowyer’s tactics praised for last season’s relegation escape, offer hope. Fans will be hoping to be optimistic that the presence of these new signings will start to push the team on as they continue to avoid the summit of League One.

George Evans’ loan move from Wrexham is a bold statement of intent from Burton Albion, showcasing their determination to reverse their fortunes in League One. At 30, Evans remains in his prime of his career, bringing a wealth of experience and versatility to help both in the midfield and in defence.

His arrival could be the catalyst to end the Brewers’ torrid three-match losing streak, providing the composure and leadership needed to stabilise the squad. With Gary Bowyer’s proven ability to navigate tough spells, Evans’ presence could spark a resurgence, galvanising the team and fans alike as they push for a mid-table climb.
