Bristol Rovers have confirmed that George Friend will step down from his position as Director of Football at the end of the 2024/25 season, with Ricky Martin, former Technical Director at Stoke City and Norwich City, appointed as his successor.
Friend, who has held the role since February 2024, will remain at the club until the end of the season to ensure a seamless handover of football operations to Martin.
During his tenure, Friend played a key role in developing the club’s infrastructure and game model, while also contributing to plans for the club’s new training ground and stadium facilities. He leaves behind a club with a solid foundation, including a talented first-team squad and promising homegrown players integrated into the senior side.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Board, the staff, the players, and our fans for their support during my time as Director Of Football,” said Friend. “I look forward to seeing how the Club continues to develop and I wish Ricky every success when he takes over the role following a handover period.”
George Friend’s Career
George Friend started his career at Exeter City, where he made his mark before earning a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had brief spells on loan at clubs like Millwall and Scunthorpe but never quite cemented a place at Wolves.
Friend really found his stride at Doncaster Rovers, where his consistent performances caught the eye of Middlesbrough. He spent eight years at Boro, becoming a fan favourite and captaining the side. Towards the end of his career, he moved to Birmingham City, adding experience and leadership. Friend eventually retired after a solid career marked by loyalty and commitment.
Ricky Martin’s Extensive Experience in Football
Ricky Martin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, having spent over two decades working in English football. Martin’s most recent role was as Technical Director at Stoke City, where he helped develop a long-term strategy for the club’s growth. Before that, he served as Academy Manager at West Ham United, where he oversaw the development of 17 players who went on to make their first-team debuts. His extensive background makes him well-equipped to take Bristol Rovers to the next level.
