Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has provided an update on Christoph Klarer’s fitness after the Austrian defender was forced off during their 4-0 win against Cambridge United on Tuesday night.
The Blues showed no signs of fatigue after their FA Cup exit to Newcastle United, producing a dominant display in League One. Jay Stansfield, Kieran Dowell, and Luke Harris all got on the scoresheet, while an own goal from Liam Bennett rounded off an emphatic performance.
However, despite the victory, Birmingham City’s celebrations were dampened when Klarer was substituted with 20 minutes remaining. The centre-back appeared to be in discomfort, and Davies has now admitted that the club will be closely monitoring his condition.
“He was feeling something, the extent of it I don’t know, but he couldn’t continue so it’s a bit of a concern. We’ll have to see how he is in the next couple of days.”
Key player for the Blues
Klarer has been a crucial figure in Birmingham’s defence this season, playing 35 matches across all competitions. His ability to organise the backline and his leadership qualities have made him one of Davies’ most trusted players.
His importance has only grown as he has worn the captain’s armband at times in Krystian Bielik’s absence. Losing the 24-year-old for any significant period would be a setback for the League One leaders.
Reports suggest that Klarer’s discomfort was in his lower back, though further assessment will be needed to determine the severity of the problem.
Who could step in?
If Klarer is forced to miss games, Davies has options in his squad to reshuffle the defence. Bielik, a versatile option, could drop back into the centre of defence, where he would likely partner Ben Davies.
Another alternative is Grant Hanley, who arrived in the winter transfer window. Hanley’s experience could be invaluable if Bielik is preferred in midfield, particularly with Paik Seung-ho and Tomoki Iwata returning to fitness.
Regardless of the decision, Davies will hope Klarer’s injury is not a serious one, as Birmingham push for promotion back to the Championship.
Site opinion
Although Birmingham City have the squad depth to cover for Klarer’s absence, losing a defender of his calibre is never ideal. His leadership and consistency have been vital this season, and Davies will be keen to have him back as soon as possible. With Bielik and Hanley available, the Blues do have cover, but Klarer’s situation will be one to watch closely in the coming days.
