Birmingham City secured another impressive comeback victory against Lincoln City, continuing their excellent form at the top of League One.
Despite falling behind in the opening minute, the Blues responded with goals from Keshi Anderson and Willum Willumsson to seal a 3-1 win. However, manager Chris Davies, while thrilled by the team’s growth, admitted there is still work to be done, particularly in defending set pieces.
Chris Davies praised his team’s resilience, particularly their ability to bounce back after conceding Bailey Cadamarteri’s early goal. Anderson quickly equalised, and Willumsson added another just after half-time, with Anderson sealing the win late on. Davies was particularly pleased with the team’s structure and ball control, stating, “I thought we dominated the ball, had good structure throughout and used the ball well.”
Birmingham City’s impressive win keeps them at the top of the table, with 13 of their 25 points coming from losing positions, reinforcing their reputation as the league’s comeback kings. Reflecting on the performance, Davies said, “It was an excellent result, an excellent performance.” Despite this, he noted the early goal conceded from a long throw, calling it “the worst possible start.”
Blues Continue to Show Growth Under Davies
The victory over Lincoln was another demonstration of Birmingham City’s growing confidence and mental strength under Davies. They have now won eight out of their last nine matches, showing a remarkable ability to fight back from adversity. The manager praised his team’s ability to adapt and maintain control of the game, even when things did not go according to plan.
Davies emphasised the importance of bouncing back quickly from setbacks. “Football’s never perfect,” he remarked, adding that it’s essential to “react, react and react again.” His team demonstrated that quality once more, as they recovered from a disastrous start to claim all three points in convincing fashion.
The manager was particularly pleased with the maturity shown by his players as they closed out the game. “Towards the end of the game, you’re away from home and 3-1 up, there was a steeliness about us, and I think there’s a growth there,” Davies said. This resilience has been a hallmark of his team, and Davies believes they are only getting stronger as the season progresses.
Defensive Set Pieces Remain a Concern
While the victory was undoubtedly satisfying, Davies was not entirely happy with his team’s defensive performance. For the second consecutive league game, Birmingham City conceded from a long throw-in, a recurring issue that the manager highlighted. “We’ve defended set pieces well this season but there’s been a few lapses, so that’s something we’ll have to look at,” Davies said, acknowledging the need for improvement in that area.
The early goal against Lincoln mirrored similar problems in previous matches, and Davies is keen to address these defensive weaknesses moving forward. He expressed his frustration at conceding simple goals, noting that “it was over in the blink of an eye.” Despite the lapse, Davies remained positive, praising his team’s ability to regain composure and dominate the match from then on.
