In a major setback for Birmingham City, manager Chris Davies has confirmed that two of the club’s key attacking players, Scott Wright and Lyndon Dykes, will be sidelined for an extended period due to injuries.
Wright, who suffered a serious knee injury in the recent 0-0 draw against Reading, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. Meanwhile, Dykes picked up a calf issue in the same match, and while his injury isn’t as severe, his return before the season ends remains uncertain.
Their absence was felt in Birmingham’s 2-0 victory over Leyton Orient on Tuesday night, with both players missing from the squad. Despite goals from Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Ethan Laird securing the win, Davies admitted that losing two attacking options was a considerable setback.
“Sadly Scott Wright is a longer-term knee injury, which is a real blow,” Davies told Birmingham Live. “I’m sorry for Scott that that’s happened because he has had some big moments for us this season.”
A Major Blow for Birmingham’s Attacking Setup
With Birmingham pushing for promotion and preparing for an important trip to Wembley, the injuries could not have come at a worse time. Wright has been a crucial part of the squad this season, while Dykes has been a consistent presence in the forward line.
Davies hinted that while Wright is definitely out, there remains a slight possibility that Dykes could feature in the final stages of the campaign.
“Hopefully we can see him before the end of this season,” Davies said. “The cup final might come too soon, but after that, there are still five league games left where he could make a difference.”
Additional Injury Concerns
Birmingham were also without Keshi Anderson in their midweek fixture, but his absence is expected to be short-lived. The winger suffered a hamstring strain but is likely to return within a couple of weeks, offering some relief to Davies and his squad.
The Birmingham boss now faces a difficult task in reshaping his attack. With Wright unavailable and Dykes’ return uncertain, Davies will have to rely on other players stepping up in the crucial upcoming fixtures.
Site Opinion
Injuries are an unfortunate part of football, but Birmingham City have been hit particularly hard at a pivotal moment in their season. Wright’s absence for the rest of the campaign is a huge loss, and while Dykes might return, there are no guarantees. Davies will need to find solutions quickly, as Birmingham’s Wembley trip and promotion push could depend on how well they cope with these setbacks.
