AFC Wimbeldon Seal Agreement With 27-Year-Old

AFC Wimbledon striker Matty Stevens has signed a new two-year contract with the League Two club following a prolific debut campaign.

Stevens, 27, arrived at Plough Lane last summer after being released by Forest Green Rovers and has since gone on to score 21 goals in all competitions – 17 of them in League Two – helping fire Johnnie Jackson’s side into promotion contention.

Although his original deal still had a year remaining, Stevens has been rewarded for his form with an extension that ties him to the club until summer 2027.

“I’m over the moon. I’ve always said since I got here that I’ve really enjoyed it and I think this extension underlines that. The main thing now is to focus on matters on the pitch. Myself and my family are delighted to get this agreement done.

The fans, staff and players have made me feel so comfortable here – they all played a big role in my decision. Now we have to come together to get us over the line and back into League One.”

The striker’s career has seen him rise through the ranks after initially balancing football with boxing. He came through youth spells at Aldershot, Farnborough and Reading before breaking into the senior game at Barnet as a teenager – setting club records for youngest player and youngest goalscorer in national competition.

After time at Peterborough United, where he had a series of loan spells including a prolific stint at Kettering Town, Stevens moved to Forest Green in 2019. His 27-goal season in 2021–22 helped fire the Gloucestershire club to the League Two title and earned him a place in both the EFL and PFA Teams of the Year.

He joined Wimbledon as a free agent in May 2024 following Forest Green’s relegation and marked his debut with a goal in a 4-2 win over Colchester United.

Site opinion

Stevens has been a revelation at Plough Lane, and this new deal is a win-win. For the player, it reflects the faith the club has in him. For Wimbledon, it’s a statement of ambition. In a tight promotion race, retaining your top scorer can make all the difference. With four goals separating him from the golden boot, and Wimbledon chasing League One, don’t bet against him firing the Dons to glory.
