Accrington Stanley have announced the signing of veteran striker Paddy Madden on a season-long loan from League Two rivals, Chesterfield.
The 35-year-old journeyman arrives at the Wham Stadium hoping to get more game time as he enters the later stages of his career.
One Last Hoorah?
The Irishman’s impressive career spans over a decade in the Football League with over 200 goals. Madden’s career began at Bohemians in Ireland, where he debuted in the League of Ireland and, over a 2-year period, looked to break into the team.
Madden showcased early promise with a loan spell at Shelbourne in 2009, in which he scored 8 goals in 16 appearances, earning him a transfer to Carlisle United in English League One the season after. He scored twice in 36 appearances over a three-year stint, helping him to gain valuable experience in English professional football.
His breakout came at Yeovil Town the season after, on loan, later signing permanently. Madden’s maiden season for The Glovers saw him score 23 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions, guiding him to the League One Golden Boot in 2012/13, which helped Yeovil earn Championship promotion via the play-offs.
Joining Scunthorpe United in 2014, Madden became a fan favourite over his 5-year season at the Iron. He netted 60 goals in 195 games, contributing to their 2013/14 promotion to League One.
In 2018, Madden signed with Fleetwood Town for a rumoured fee of £150,000. Becoming their all-time EFL top scorer with 53 goals in 149 appearances.
Madden’s most celebrated spell was at Stockport County between 2020 and 2024. His 65 goals in 156 league games powered them to National League and League Two titles, cementing his status as a club legend.
In 2024, Madden signed a two-year deal with Chesterfield. Injuries limited him to five goals in 27 appearances, leading to his Accrington loan after Chesterfield’s impressive front line was emphasised by the permanent signing of Lee Bonis.
Madden brings leadership and a tireless work rate. He earned one Republic of Ireland cap in 2013.
Strong Praise For The New Man
Manager John Doolan said: “To get Paddy to this club has been a big deal for us – it just shows the intent
He also added: “Paddy has scored goals at every club he’s been at and really is the full package – he works hard, he can run in behind, he can hold the ball up, and he’s a good target man – he’s just everything.

Paddy Madden is a fantastic signing for an Accrington side who are believed by many to be at the bottom end of the League Two table this season. His experience and goals could just give them that edge over rivals at the bottom end of the budget table.
However, is it really a wise move to get a 35-year-old on a season-long loan? That’s the big question being asked by many in the Accrington circle. Despite minor criticisms, Madden will no doubt get fans on side and soon become a fan favourite in what are looking like worring times in Lancashire this season.
