Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has addressed the situation surrounding defender Bobby Faulkner and the club’s recent decision to recall Will Flint from his loan at Darlington.
Following a season-ending injury to Joseph Olowu, McCann opted to bring Flint back early, but questions arose as to why Faulkner was not recalled instead, especially given that the centre-back is also on loan in the National League North at Buxton.
McCann Explains Faulkner’s Ineligibility
The main issue, McCann clarified, is that Faulkner, who has been performing well at Buxton, is ineligible to return to Doncaster this season due to his prior involvement with Dundalk in the League of Ireland. A player can only represent two clubs in one season, meaning Faulkner’s stint at Dundalk precludes him from playing for Rovers again this term.
“You can only play for two clubs in one season so it was never an option for us to bring Bobby back. We probably would have brought him back, as well as Will, just to keep us covered but we obviously can’t do that,” McCann said.
McCann acknowledged the frustrations of some supporters who had hoped Faulkner could be recalled to bolster the defensive ranks. However, the club’s hands were tied due to the regulations regarding player eligibility.
Flint’s Versatility Brings Additional Options
McCann also stressed that the decision to bring Flint back was a practical one, as the versatile academy graduate can play in various positions, including central defence, full-back, or midfield. With Olowu’s injury leaving a gap in the squad, Flint’s ability to cover multiple roles gives McCann valuable options as the team navigates the rest of the season.
“Will can play numerous positions so he gives us a lot of options,” McCann added. “He’s playing well at Buxton and enjoying it, so we’re happy for him to continue to play.”
Site Opinion
While McCann’s explanation about the ineligibility of Faulkner makes sense, it’s clear that Doncaster Rovers are now focusing on the versatility that Flint offers. The decision highlights the importance of squad depth and flexibility as Rovers prepare for their upcoming fixtures. With key players injured, McCann will be hoping that his team can cover the gaps effectively while continuing their push for success.
