Walsall Prepare To Battle To Keep 24-Year-Old

Walsall look set for a battle to keep hold of a key component of their promotion charge this summer.

Hibernian have set their sights on Saddlers centre-back Oisin McEntee as part of a planned summer overhaul, with the former Newcastle United prospect emerging as a prime target for Easter Road boss David Gray.

Defensive Reinforcements Targeted

The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has attracted interest thanks to a string of solid performances for League Two side Walsall. Hibs’ recruitment team, led by sporting director Malky Mackay, are believed to be impressed by McEntee’s development and are conducting background checks ahead of a potential move.

Born in New York City but raised in Ireland, McEntee came through the youth system at Newcastle United, captaining their U18 side before gaining first-team experience during a loan spell with Greenock Morton. He later joined Walsall in 2022, and though he underwent shoulder surgery shortly after signing, he returned to become a reliable figure at the heart of their defence.

The defender also boasts international experience at youth level, having represented the Republic of Ireland at various age groups, including the 2018 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

Walsall Contract Situation

McEntee extended his Walsall contract in late 2023, but with his current deal nearing its expiry and no fresh terms yet agreed, Hibs are looking to pounce. The Edinburgh club see the move as a smart opportunity to bring in a player with both physical presence and leadership qualities, without the need for a significant transfer fee.

Gray is preparing for a significant reshaping of his squad in the off-season. Despite guiding Hibs to third place in the Premiership, the club is expected to part ways with several first-team players, including those currently out of contract like Martin Boyle, Lewis Miller, Rocky Bushiri, Junior Hoilett, Dwight Gayle, and Max Boruc. Some contracts do include one-year extension options, but decisions are still pending.

Site Opinion

Oisin McEntee represents exactly the type of profile Hibs should be targeting—young, experienced at multiple levels, and available at low cost. With David Gray looking to build a side capable of challenging on multiple fronts, McEntee’s familiarity with Scottish football, from his Morton loan, adds further appeal.

His blend of youth, leadership and grit could make him a shrewd piece of business in what promises to be a transformative summer at Easter Road.
