Reading FC could be set to lose defender Amadou Mbengue this summer with multiple clubs expressing interest in the 23-year-old as his contract approaches its end.
The Senegalese youth international, who signed from French club Metz in 2022, has been a standout performer for the Royals during a challenging period for the club. With more than 100 league appearances to his name, Mbengue has established himself as one of the most reliable players at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Initially used across the back four and in midfield under former boss Paul Ince, Mbengue has since thrived in a settled centre-back pairing alongside Tyler Bindon. His commanding displays and versatility have earned him plenty of admirers — and now, as his deal nears expiry, clubs are ready to pounce.
Championship rivals Watford and Blackburn Rovers are both reportedly interested, while Brest, currently sitting eighth in France’s top division, are also keeping close tabs.
Mbengue’s football journey began at Metz, where he rose through the youth ranks before making his Ligue 1 debut in 2021. After leaving the French side, he impressed while on trial at Reading, eventually signing a short-term deal that was later extended following some excellent performances.
Supporters quickly took Mbengue to their hearts, especially after he scored his first professional goal against Coventry City in December 2022. His commitment and consistency have been vital for a Reading side navigating difficult times both on and off the pitch.
However, with the club’s ownership issues still unresolved and a looming EFL deadline for a takeover, retaining key players like Mbengue is proving difficult.
The defender’s call-up to the Senegal U23 squad in 2023 marked another step in his career progression, further raising his profile at home and abroad.
Reading’s management now faces a race against time to convince Mbengue to stay, but with suitors from both England and France circling, the odds appear increasingly stacked against them.
