Sam Dalby could be heading for a Wrexham exit this summer despite being offered a new deal at the STōK Cae Ras, with Dundee United making a determined play for his signature.
Dalby’s breakout year in Scotland
Few could have predicted the impact Dalby would have in the Scottish Premiership after joining Dundee United on loan last summer. Having managed just one goal in League Two last season, Dalby has exploded into form, scoring 13 goals in 26 appearances to become one of the standout performers north of the border.
His remarkable improvement has put him firmly on the radar of multiple clubs. Dundee United are keen to act swiftly, with manager Jim Goodwin underlining the importance of trying to keep Dalby at Tannadice Park.
“We’re going to try and compete and hold on to Sam. We are realistic about that situation but, at the same time, if ever there was a player worth pushing the boat out for, then a proven goalscorer would certainly be that.”
Goodwin is aware that English clubs are monitoring Dalby’s situation, but feels United offer the perfect platform for the striker to continue his rise.
Wrexham’s contract offer – but is it enough?
Wrexham have made their move by tabling a contract extension for Dalby. However, the club’s striking department is already overcrowded after the arrivals of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez. With club legends Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer potentially moving on, and Steven Fletcher considering extending his career, the picture is complex.
Returning to Wrexham would present significant competition for Dalby, and he may feel that a guaranteed starting role at Dundee United is more attractive at this crucial stage of his career.
Phil Parkinson faces a delicate balancing act, knowing Dalby’s stock is at an all-time high but also needing to trim numbers in his forward department. A permanent transfer away from Wrexham seems increasingly likely, with Dundee United leading the chase but not alone in their pursuit.
Dalby’s next move will be pivotal. Does he back himself to break into the Championship with Wrexham if they secure promotion, or does he opt for the security of regular football and continue thriving in Scotland?
Site opinion
Dalby’s performances this season show how much he has developed away from Wrexham. Although the Dragons have offered him fresh terms, the reality is that first-team chances could still be limited. A move to Dundee United would offer Dalby regular football and the chance to build on his breakthrough season – a smart step for a player finally fulfilling his potential.
