It might only be three games, but Matt Hamshaw has already done enough to convince most Rotherham United fans that he should be the man to lead the club forward—and now talks are underway to make that happen.
After stepping in following Steve Evans’ dismissal just 11 days ago, Hamshaw has inspired a dramatic upturn in form, guiding the Millers to three consecutive wins over Northampton Town, Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers. Even more impressively, his side are yet to concede from open play in that time.
Chairman Tony Stewart is now locked in discussions with Hamshaw about a longer-term deal, with both parties seemingly open to continuing the relationship beyond the current campaign.
“I speak to the chairman every day really, we have a good relationship,” Hamshaw said. “He’s happy with how things are going at the moment, as we all are. It’s about seeing if we both fit each other and talking about what the future looks like.”
Stewart sees future in steady hands
The chairman has long admired Hamshaw’s contribution to the club. The former midfielder was part of multiple promotions under Paul Warne and also played a key role during his coaching stint at Derby County. But it’s this most recent return to the hot seat that has fans and the boardroom alike excited.
“There’s no rush from me or him,” Hamshaw continued. “I’m sure he’s got questions for me, and I’ve got questions for him.”
Despite no formal offer being confirmed, a deal could be wrapped up as soon as next week if progress continues. The Millers face Stockport County on Saturday, with momentum fully in their favour.
Supporters rally behind their man
From the terraces to social media, the verdict has been resoundingly positive. Hamshaw’s passion, honesty, and connection to the badge have restored pride at a time when the fanbase was growing increasingly disillusioned. Matchday atmospheres have improved, and belief is creeping back into the New York Stadium.
That connection isn’t just sentimental—it’s strategic. Hamshaw understands the club inside out, and the performances since his appointment show a squad playing with renewed belief and clear tactical direction.
Site opinion
Hamshaw is ticking every box—tactically, emotionally, and practically. The response from the players, the results on the pitch, and his open dialogue with the chairman suggest it’s not a matter of *if*, but *when* he gets the job permanently. And if Rotherham want to build towards their centenary year with stability and identity, then making Hamshaw the permanent boss is the only logical step.
