Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has delivered a scathing verdict on his squad’s recent displays—singling out Tayo Edun’s red card against Northampton Town as a moment of “madness” that could have serious consequences for the player’s future.
Speaking on his ‘Hard Truth’ podcast, MacAnthony didn’t hold back in criticising the professionalism and discipline of certain players following back-to-back defeats against rivals Northampton and promotion-chasers Birmingham City.
Edun was sent off for violent conduct in the first half of the 4-0 loss to the Cobblers, and MacAnthony believes the moment could have lasting repercussions.
“Of course the red card didn’t help. It exacerbated the situation. Tayo lost his head and picked up his second red card in a few games. I’ve always said I can accept mistakes, but don’t then make the same mistake twice. We need to be able to trust players. I can’t defend ridiculous red cards,” he said.
The chairman also referenced past examples of ill-discipline within the squad, including incidents involving striker Bradley Ihionvien, who was observed “kicking out at opponents” during the club’s recent unbeaten run.
‘Temper tantrum’ and team-first mentality questioned
While Edun’s actions were a focal point, MacAnthony also turned his attention to another unnamed player who reacted poorly to being substituted during the 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City.
“One of our players had a temper tantrum after being subbed. He wasn’t playing that well, yet threw his hands in the air, didn’t shake hands properly and kicked a water bottle like a petulant child,” he revealed.
MacAnthony expressed concern about whether certain individuals had the character and team-first mentality required for a promotion-chasing side, referencing Birmingham’s professionalism and unity as a benchmark.
“Their players worked hard, accepted their manager’s decisions, and gave everything,” he said. “That’s what we’ve had in our best teams.”

These are some of the most brutally honest comments from MacAnthony this season—and they feel like a line in the sand. Edun’s talent is unquestionable, but two red cards in quick succession point to a player on the brink. With contracts and squad decisions looming, discipline may prove just as crucial as ability. MacAnthony’s message is clear: commitment and professionalism are non-negotiable at Posh.
